Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund Supports Harbor Homes’ Veteran’s FIRST Program

On 07/19/2011

“We are delighted to receive support for our Veterans FIRST program from the Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund,” stated Peter Kelleher, President & CEO of Harbor Homes, Inc. “Our veterans program has been successful in assisting over 175 veterans and their families move from homelessness to independence in the past few years. Equally important, the program allows these individuals to obtain the necessary tools to address the issues that led them to homelessness.”  The funding helps provide veterans with critical needs such as emergency and transitional housing, food, essentials, case management, and employment training, as well as assistance in the job search process. Other services include mental health and substance use disorder counseling. “Funding from the Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund allows Harbor Homes to offset the costs of providing these essential services needed to give these veterans a second chance.”

The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund makes grants to tax-exempt organizations without regard to religious affiliation for projects that help people in New Hampshire meet their basic needs. The Fund is operated by volunteer lay men and women who serve as Directors and who make recommendations to the Bishop of Manchester for grants to any organization in New Hampshire whose mission is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The Fund raises money through solicitation of individuals, businesses and philanthropic organizations. An annual accounting of funds raised and disbursements is available at www.catholicnh.org/BCAF.

Harbor Homes has been providing housing and supportive services in the Greater Nashua area for over thirty years. It is a private, non-profit agency that creates and provides quality services for individuals and their families challenged with mental illness and/or experiencing homelessness. The agency was built upon a core belief that individuality, dignity, self-respect and a safe place to live are key to a person’s ability to contribute to society. Harbor Homes offers a variety of residential housing programs, including several specific to homeless veterans experiencing varying degrees of independence. Supplementing the housing component, integrated supportive services are made available based on the specific needs of clients. The agency also provides non-residential programs designed to empower individuals towards recovery and integration in our community.
