President Obama and the First Lady are Determined to Prevent Homlessness Amongst Veterans

Recently Huffington Post blogged about how President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama were awarded for the second time the Jerald Washington Memorial Founders’ Award. This award is only given to those dedicated to ending homelessness for veterans. Our president and first lady have been working hard on a project called “Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness”. This project is hoping to end chronic homelessness amongst our veterans by the year 2015. Here at Harbor Homes, we have a similar mission.When a local homeless veteran was found dead on the banks of the Nashua River staff at Harbor Homes took it upon themselves to find out how they could better serve the men and women who fought for our country. Infographic Depicts how Prescribed Painkillers can be Deadly

Scientific American posted five of the best infographics depicting the current trends around drug use nationwide. A couple weeks ago we blogged about the second infographic that depicted drugs’ devastating effects on the body’s organs.This week’s installment is about how overdose deaths due to prescription painkillers is increasing and even exceeding overdose deaths from heroin and cocaine combined. With the visualization of this infrographic, it is easy to see how deaths from overdoses of prescription painkillers have more than tripled in the past decade. Nashua Dental Practice Teams with Harbor Homes to Provide Free Dental Care to the Homeless

Harbor Care Health and Wellness Center, a community health clinic for the homeless operated by Harbor Homes, Inc., provided a “Dental Day of Caring” on April 6, 2012 thanks to a unique collaboration with Dr. Albert St. Germain of Merrimack Valley Dental Care. Dr. Albert St. Germain donated dental services, supplies, and his staff to provide basic cleanings, fillings and extractions for eight hours to 22 homeless individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford these treatments. Other local dentists also donated supplies. The cost of these donated services and supplies amounted to $7,775. Kristine Howard, Registered Nurse, Clinical Coordinator of Harbor Care Health and Wellness Center, expressed Harbor Homes’ gratitude for these services, “This is the third time that members of the local dentist community have donated their time and supplies through a Dental Day of Caring.
